Recent improvements: following systems and tags, weekly digests, and more
I rolled out a number of improvements since the site launched. Below is a summary.
Playtesting
- Message thread with a playtest applicant. Helpful for clarifying questions or confirming availability for a session.
- Message thread for everyone in a particular session.
- Better handling of playtests with scheduled sessions. Players can now indicate which session(s) they can make when they apply for a playtest.
(I already posted a more detailed update about playtesting improvements here.)
Following systems and tags
- In addition to following people, studios, and projects, you can now follow systems and tags.
- Activity from followed systems and tags is included on your homepage's activity feed, weekly digest, and other emails depending on your settings.
- Added dedicated index pages for systems and tags, to facilitate discovery and make it easier to find items to follow. Tags are rendered as a cloud, indicating how often that tag is used. It's already interesting to watch this develop.
Weekly digests
- A weekly digest email now goes out every Sunday (only when there's something to report, based on what you follow).
- By default, this includes new activity on items you follow, as well as updates on your own items.
- By checking an optional "Include what's new across RPG Lab" checkbox in your settings, it can also include sitewide activity. I defaulted this to off for existing users, since you didn't explicitly sign up for this. New users can opt into this during sign-up.
Activity feed on the homepage
- The homepage now includes a limited feed of recent sitewide activity, such as new posts on projects you don't follow.
Comments
- Improved UI for post comments to more clearly distinguish between writing a new top level comment vs. replying to an existing thread.
- Improved notifications and emails. Previously, post authors only received notifications for new top level comments, not nested replies. And thread participants didn't receive any updates.
Private projects
- Added a banner for project owners that clearly indicates when the project is still private and not visible to anyone else.
Following page
- When viewing this as the owner, now also shows followed systems and tags, and makes it easy to unfollow them. Other users only see the people and projects you follow.
- Added a link to the account menu to make this more discoverable.
- Improved the layout by grouping the followed items (projects, people, studios).
