Aetherworlds · update

To Whom It May Concern

By Christopher Hogrefe (@christhethinmint)

Hello RPGLab! I added my project here on a whim after seeing the reddit post. Better to just go and try things rather than deliberating about them, right? The website looks like a good start, and I would love to see more people jump on board.

If they do, I suppose getting a public eye on my project might motivate me to finally put out something more concrete. I've always had big ideas and big plans for Aetherworlds, but I repeatedly committed the prime sin of game design - not creating something playable early enough! To be honest, I am not sure how my game would even stand up to a playtest. A lot of the mechanics might work in theory but not in practice. But I'll have to do it at some point.

I don't want to promise anything at this time as I still have a lot of other things to deal with. I might just get my files in order and keep developing the lore over time. But if I focus on Aetherworlds again, I would likely do one of the following:

1) Finally create and run a playtest (likely in the form of a vertical slice since a simple combat or dungeon crawl would lack a lot of context)

2) Try to write a short story or novel within the setting, or an atlas about it (something like the Silmarillion or other worldbuilding works)

3) Write a supplement that lets people use Aetherworlds content within another system, likely PF2E

We will see which one I end up doing. Any interest is appreciated - maybe I just need a nudge in the right direction.

For the first update, I'd also like to reiterate that you can always view my raw notes and drafts for the project here: https://notebook.google.com/notebook/9628db6c-455c-4534-9ef8-ba02ad7d57ae I certainly don't expect anyone to do so unless they are really interested, but don't feel like you are not allowed to. If you have any questions or suggestions, simply want to chat, or god forbid even want to collaborate with or write something for my world, I'm more than happy to talk here, via Email (jeanhogrefe@gmail.com) or on Discord (christhethinmint).

Thank you for reading!

Until next time,
Chris

Thanks for sharing your project, Chris!

I think we all have our pet projects that we keep growing and tweaking without getting them in front of actual players. So congrats on planning that next step soon. :)

Testing a vertical slice definitely sounds ideal, if you can pull it off. I think if the session is officially declared as a playtest and you set clear expectations, players should be ok with cutting scenes as needed so you can test the full range of mechanics.
