Tagline (working title; might change later) is a rules-light universal RPG with player-facing dice rolls.
Here are my main goals for the game:
- Universal: Not tied to a specific genre or setting, and applicable to many
- Rules-light: Core rules should be simple and fit on 1-2 pages
- Ideal for pick-up games, but interesting enough to support a micro-campaign, including character advancement
- Player-facing: Only players roll dice, allowing the GM to focus on interpreting outcomes, running the world, and presenting interesting challenges to the players
- Unified mechanic: Combat and other challenges use the same dice resolution
- Dice-pool based, using only six-sided dice; both because this makes it convenient for pick-up games, but also because of the resulting probability curves
- No math
- Minimal stats, yet sufficient character differentiation
- Moddable: The base game is lean and supports many settings as-is; mods dial it to support other experiences (e.g. heroic vs. gritty)
- Digital Toolkit: I want to experiment with building digital tools that not only support running sessions, but also selecting mods, customizing traits, and more.
Below are some of my inspirations. That doesn't mean that Tagline directly borrows specific mechanics, but certain gameplay aspects might feel familiar.
- Fate (aspects, compel, creating advantages, success at cost)
- Cortex Prime (trait sets, hindering distinctions, modular design)
- Outgunned (player-facing, d6 pool, action/reaction phases, simple NPC stats)
I will share more about Tagline RPG in updates soon.
